Birth Control Pills Linked to Fatal Blood Clot in Teen

A 19-year-old British teen died from a fatal brain blood clot that her family believes was caused by her combination birth control pills. Áine Rose Hurst from Bolton had been taking estrogen-progestin pills since age 15 to manage heavy periods, according to her mother Kerry Hurst.

Hurst told Sky News that Áine initially thought she had a hangover after a night at a friend's house, but her persistent headache worsened over several days. When paramedics arrived after she stopped responding, doctors discovered a massive clot in her brain that was too large to treat. She died minutes after life support was withdrawn.

An investigation cited the birth control pill as the likely cause of the clot, which the coroner's court noted was a "recognised but rare side effect." Hurst and her family are now advocating for greater awareness about the potential risks of hormonal contraceptives, particularly the 102-page patient information leaflets that few people read.

Quick Fact: Birth control pills containing estrogen increase blood clot risk to between 1 and 5 people per 10,000 annually.
