Bananas and Blood Pressure: Cardiologists Explain the Connection

Bananas are America's most popular fruit, with nearly half of U.S. adults managing high blood pressure. The connection between this everyday fruit and cardiovascular health has drawn attention from medical experts. Three cardiologists explain exactly how bananas affect blood pressure and whether they can be part of a heart-healthy diet.

Dr. Laura Isaacson, a cardiologist and registered dietitian, says bananas can help lower blood pressure because they're rich in potassium. This mineral helps the body eliminate excess sodium through the kidneys, reducing fluid retention and easing pressure on blood vessel walls. While the effect isn't dramatic, Dr. Ragavendra Baliga notes that potassium blunts sodium's impact, leading to a moderate decrease in blood pressure. Dr. Rajeev L. Narayan explains that potassium helps blood vessels relax, improving blood flow and literally taking pressure off your arteries.

One banana a day provides sufficient benefits, according to the cardiologists. Eating multiple bananas won't double the blood-pressure effect and may add excess calories or potassium. People taking certain medications like ACE inhibitors or ARBs should consult their doctor before significantly increasing potassium intake. Regular banana consumption, combined with other heart-healthy foods, supports cardiovascular health through fiber, antioxidants, and magnesium. However, all three experts emphasize that bananas alone can't replace medication or other lifestyle changes when needed.
