Archaeologists have uncovered a 5,000-year-old fortified settlement hidden beneath the dense forests of Neamț County, Romania. Using LiDAR technology mounted on drones, researchers created detailed aerial images of the ancient structure that had remained concealed by vegetation for millennia.

The study, a collaboration between Geocad Services, Geo Edu Lab, and the National Institute for Research and Development for Earth Physics, revealed an elaborate fortification dating to the transition between the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. Archaeologist Vasile Diaconu led the research, noting that LiDAR scans captured details impossible to observe in the field due to thick forest cover.

The findings demonstrate the settlement's sophisticated design, with defensive features including extensive ditches and earthen mounds strategically positioned in high-visibility areas. The impressive scale of these fortifications, with ditches measuring several hundred meters, indicates the significant human effort required for construction. This technological approach represents a crucial advancement in archaeological research, allowing scientists to study inaccessible sites without invasive excavation methods.
