Ancient Petra Reveals Advanced Water Engineering

Archaeologists led by Niklas Jungmann of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin have discovered a second conduit in the 'Ain Braq aqueduct system at Petra, Jordan. This previously unknown pressurized lead pipeline reveals that the ancient Nabatean water management system was more sophisticated than historians believed.

The discovery shows the Nabateans constructed an inverted siphon system using welded lead pipes to transport water beneath their desert city. This technological innovation allowed Petra to thrive as a major trading center despite its semiarid climate, supplying water to baths, gardens, temples, and reservoirs.

Published in the journal _Levant_, the research confirms that Petra's hydraulic systems were remarkably advanced for their time. The lead conduit measured approximately 380 feet and was buried in concrete to bypass surface obstacles, demonstrating the Nabateans' engineering prowess in managing scarce water resources in one of the ancient world's driest cities.
