Researchers in Saudi Arabia have made a groundbreaking discovery that could reshape efforts to reintroduce cheetahs to the Arabian Peninsula. While surveying caves near Arar in 2022 and 2023, scientists with the National Center for Wildlife found seven naturally mummified cheetahs, with DNA analysis revealing surprising genetic diversity.

Previously, it was believed only the Asiatic cheetah subspecies inhabited Saudi Arabia. However, examination of three mummies showed that two of the oldest specimens belonged to the Northwest African cheetah lineage. This finding, published in Communications Earth & Environment, demonstrates that at least two cheetah subspecies once roamed the peninsula, with some remains dating back 4,000 years.

The discovery provides crucial evidence for conservation efforts. With large protected areas now established in the Middle East and threats like habitat degradation reduced, Saudi Arabia is positioned to support cheetah recovery. The genetic data allows scientists to identify which cheetah lineages are ecologically appropriate for reintroduction, moving beyond theoretical plans to evidence-based conservation strategies.
