Alabama Truck Crash Driver Back in Business Despite Fatalities

Mamuye Ayane Takelu, the driver who killed 10 people including eight children in a 2021 Alabama crash, has returned to commercial trucking despite a history of multiple accidents. E&V Login Trucking LLC, formed by Takelu in April 2024, now operates with state violations including running vehicles without proper DOT markings.

Takelu was driving for Asmat Express when he slammed into a pileup on Interstate 65 at speeds between 60 and 73 mph, pushing a van carrying children into the median where it caught fire. The crash exposed systemic failures in the regulatory system, with Takelu having been involved in three crashes in the decade before the incident. His employer was based in Clarkston, Georgia, a major hub for Ethiopian immigrant trucking workers.

Federal oversight gaps allowed Takelu to obtain operating authority despite his crash history. The FMCSA's system registers over 2 million entities but only flags about 787,000 with recent activity. Takelu exploited the lease-operator loophole, obtaining a free DOT number and leasing to carriers rather than securing full operating authority, allowing him to avoid direct accountability for safety violations while continuing to operate commercial vehicles.
