Air India 171 Crash Report: Pilot Deliberately Cut Fuel

A preliminary report on last year's Air India Flight 171 disaster alleges the pilot deliberately shut down both engines before the Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed in Ahmedabad. The June 12, 2025 crash killed 241 passengers and 19 people on the ground when the aircraft lost thrust seconds after takeoff.

Black box data recovered from the crash site reportedly shows manual fuel control switch manipulation despite no mechanical failures. Investigators from India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, with U.S. and U.K. technical assistance, found the electronically controlled fuel systems required intentional input to change flow settings. The aircraft's cockpit voice and flight data recorders provided key evidence for the investigation.

The report claims Captain Sumeet Sabharwal had experienced depression months before the crash, though his family has rejected these assertions and demanded a fresh investigation. The findings have sparked controversy among pilot associations, which previously objected to early suggestions of pilot responsibility before the final report's release.
