U.S. Air Force A-10C Warthogs recently conducted joint exercises with the USS Santa Barbara in the Persian Gulf, highlighting the aging attack jet's evolving maritime role. The drills demonstrate how the A-10C Warthog provides close air support for littoral combat ships conducting mine-hunting operations in contested waters.

The exercises come as the A-10 faces potential retirement by 2029, despite its proven effectiveness in the Middle East. The Independence class Littoral Combat Ship Santa Barbara has taken over mine-hunting duties previously handled by the Navy's now-retired Avenger class vessels. These ships operate in high-threat areas where Iranian fast boats and unmanned surface vessels pose significant risks.

With tensions between the U.S. and Iran remaining high, the A-10's ability to deliver precision strikes against small, fast-moving targets makes it uniquely valuable for protecting vulnerable mine-hunters. The aircraft's extended loiter time and durability against small arms fire allow it to provide overwatch in complex littoral environments where threats can emerge suddenly. As Iran continues developing asymmetric naval capabilities including drone boats, the A-10's maritime mission has become increasingly critical despite questions about its long-term future in the Air Force inventory.
