A massive data leak has exposed one billion personal records from 26 countries, making it one of the largest accidental data exposures in recent history. The unprotected database, discovered by cybersecurity researchers at Cybernews, belonged to IDMerit, a digital identity verification provider. Unlike a hack, this leak occurred when the company failed to secure the database with a password.

The United States suffered the most significant impact with 204 million records exposed, followed by Mexico at 123 million and the Philippines with 72 million. The exposed information included full names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, national IDs, email addresses, and telecom metadata. This structured data format makes it particularly dangerous, as cybercriminals could easily search and exploit the information.

While hackers weren't initially involved, the exposed data creates significant risks for identity theft, phishing attacks, and financial fraud. Experts recommend monitoring for suspicious communications, enrolling in identity theft protection services, and maintaining updated antivirus software. The incident highlights the critical importance of proper data security protocols for companies handling sensitive personal information.
