Waymo's robotaxis in Austin, Texas have accumulated $9,325 in parking fines since launching in 2024, according to city records obtained by The Wall Street Journal. The company operates more than 300 autonomous vehicles in Austin, representing nearly half its Texas fleet.

While the fines represent a small fraction of the $6.3 million Austin collected in parking revenue during fiscal year 2025, they highlight growing friction as robotaxi services scale nationwide. Waymo leads the market, but competitors including Tesla's Robotaxi and Amazon's Zoox also operate in the city.

Autonomous vehicles from these companies create challenges for law enforcement when navigating unpredictable situations such as emergency scenes, construction zones, and road closures. Parking compliance remains a visible pain point as the industry expands.
