U.S. Small Business Confidence Rises in June

The National Federation of Independent Business said its small-business optimism index rose 2.1 points in June to 97.4, exceeding economists' expectations of 95.7. The improvement reflects relief from lower fuel costs.

The NFIB survey provides a monthly snapshot of small businesses in the U.S., which account for nearly half of private-sector jobs. Small businesses are often more sensitive than larger firms to sudden price fluctuations, higher interest rates and broader economic uncertainty.

"Lower fuel costs provide welcome relief for businesses as well as consumers, with firms anticipating improved operating conditions over the next six months," said NFIB Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg**.
