Chain convened late‑night meetings to coordinate a swift response and pull potentially tainted lettuce from hundreds of locations. The word went out from Taco Bell leaders on the evening of July 14: Stop the trucks. Public‑health officials that night had notified the chain that shredded lettuce garnishing Crunchwrap Supremes, Cantina Chicken Burritos and other menu items was the suspected culprit in a rapidly expanding cyclospora outbreak.

Executives rushed to halt shipments then on their way to 7,785 U.S. locations. Over the course of late‑night virtual meetings and gatherings since early last week, Taco Bell executives have pushed to respond to one of the biggest food‑safety crises in the chain’s history—an episode that has lodged the phrase “explosive diarrhea” firmly in national headlines.

More than 1,600 people who became ill in the outbreak reported eating at Taco Bell locations across five states, federal health officials said last week. Officials later named produce giant Taylor Farms as the lettuce supplier.

The chain’s swift action reflects heightened scrutiny over supply chain safety and the importance of rapid containment.
