Sony, GIC Acquire Music Catalog

Sony Group has agreed to acquire Recognition Music Group's catalog of more than 45,000 songs through its venture with Singapore's sovereign-wealth fund GIC. The deal gives Sony Music Publishing ownership of works performed by major artists including Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Journey, and Red Hot Chili Peppers, expanding the company's already substantial music library.

The acquisition comes from Blackstone, which began building its music rights portfolio in 2021 with a $1 billion commitment to Hipgnosis Song Management. Blackstone later backed Hipgnosis's 2024 takeover of the London-listed Hipgnosis Songs Fund, later renamed Recognition Music Group. This transaction follows Sony's 2025 acquisition of Hipgnosis Songs Group.

The deal continues Sony's strategic expansion in music publishing rights and collaboration with Recognition and Blackstone. By acquiring this substantial catalog, Sony strengthens its position in the music industry's ongoing consolidation trend, where major players are increasingly acquiring valuable song catalogs as stable revenue streams in an evolving digital landscape.
