Singapore Airlines Posts First Loss Since 2022

Singapore Airlines posted its first quarterly net loss since 2022, reporting a 75.8 million Singapore dollar loss for the quarter ended June, while revenue actually rose. The loss was driven by soaring jet‑fuel prices amid Middle East tensions, which pushed operating profit down 74% to 105.5 million Singapore dollars.

The airline’s operating profit fell sharply as net fuel costs spiked, reflecting the broader impact of the Middle East conflict on global aviation fuel prices. Creativity in cost management could not offset the surge in input costs.

Additional pressure came from the group’s share of losses at its associate, Air India, where Singapore Airlines holds a 25.1% stake. Losses at the Indian carrier weighed heavily on the parent’s bottom line.

Overall, the first quarterly net loss highlights the vulnerability of airlines to volatile fuel markets and the challenges posed by regional geopolitical instability, even as revenue growth persists.
