Gap has hired Donald Kohler from PVH to lead Banana Republic as global brand president and chief executive, the company announced Tuesday. Kohler brings extensive experience in the apparel industry, having spent years overseeing major global brands at PVH. His leadership will be key to Banana Republic's efforts to regain market share.

Kohler most recently served as CEO of PVH Americas, where he oversaw the Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger brands across the region. He also managed the company's retail, e-commerce, wholesale and licensing businesses. PVH said Kohler decided to leave to be closer to family and pursue a new professional opportunity.

Adelyn Cheong will succeed Kohler at PVH. The leadership change comes at a challenging time for Banana Republic, which has struggled with declining sales and relevance in the competitive apparel market.
