Emirates Global Aluminum (EGA) and Century Aluminum have chosen Inola, Oklahoma, for the first U.S. primary aluminum smelter since 1980. The prairie town, already nicknamed the Hay Capital of the World, could soon add a new moniker: America’s aluminum epicenter. Construction is slated to begin this year under a joint venture between the two firms today.

The $4 billion project will produce up to 750,000 metric tons of aluminum annually, doubling U.S. smelting capacity. Once operational, the plant is expected to employ roughly 1,000 workers and will rely on the region’s growing electric‑utility grid. The investment signals a shift in the industry’s stance toward domestic production for critical metals in the national supply chain today.

Industry observers note that high electricity costs have long deterred U.S. smelters, while China dominates the global market. By re‑establishing primary production, the project could reduce reliance on imported aluminum and strengthen supply chains for aerospace, automotive, and construction sectors. The venture also aligns with federal efforts to boost domestic critical‑materials manufacturing.

Construction is expected to start by year‑end, with completion projected for 2026. The investment will place Inola on the map as a strategic hub for the U.S. aluminum industry, potentially attracting ancillary businesses and fostering regional economic growth. Stakeholders will closely monitor electricity pricing and regulatory approvals as the project moves forward by end here.
