Novartis‑Ionis cholesterol drug nears pivotal trial results

Novartis and its RNA‑targeting partner Ionis Pharmaceuticals have pushed a new cholesterol‑lowering molecule into late‑stage testing. The drug targets a blood particle linked to heart‑attack and stroke risk, a mechanism that has resisted statins. The antisense oligonucleotide lowers lipoprotein(a) by up to 80% in early trials, a result that could reshape prescribing.

Data from the pivotal cardiovascular outcomes study are expected as early as this summer. If the trial shows reductions in heart attacks, strokes and mortality, regulators could grant approval by next year, fast‑tracking the product. Such a timeline would compress the typical five‑year development cycle, pressuring rivals.

The partnership, valued at roughly $2 billion in research spend, positions Novartis to diversify beyond its oncology stronghold while giving Ionis a foothold in cardiovascular therapeutics. Market analysts now price in a $10 billion sales figure for the agent, assuming it captures a share of the $150 billion cholesterol market. The collaboration also secures a royalty stream for Ionis, estimated at 10% of sales, enhancing its cash flow.
