Newark Controllers Shortage Threatens Summer Flights

After recent improvements, the Newark Liberty International Airport air‑traffic facility faces a looming exodus of controllers and recent technology footprint lapses.

Controller staffing is set to drop by about one‑fifth by month’s end at the facility that directs aircraft to and from Newark. The Federal Aviation Administration says it has the situation under control, but the loss of personnel could still prompt tighter flight limits.

Technology upgrades have been made, yet vulnerabilities persist. In mid‑June, controllers lost radar visibility twice, one episode lasting seven minutes, highlighting the fragility of the system.

The FAA remains confident it can maintain current flight levels, provided the facility does not lose other staff and it implements a plan to prevent another radar outage.
