Nevada Solar: Economic Case for Adoption

Wall Street Journal US Business •

Nevada didn’t adopt solar because of politics. The article “Nevada Is Making Surprising Gains in Solar Energy” (U.S. News, Sept. 28) confirms what the data have shown for years: We have to use an economic case to spur adoption of solar energy. Nevada draws roughly a third of its power from the sun, and Gov. Joe Lombardo’s pitch was about jobs, reliability and cost, which is a winning argument nationwide.

Utility-scale projects like Nevada’s Mosey Solar Project and the Purple Sage Energy Center bring a number of construction jobs and lease payments to rural communities that need both. If solar is going to scale nationally at the pace our grid requires, the industry needs to make it easy to say yes with consistent messaging around savings, jobs and grid reliability.

Nevada didn’t adopt solar because of politics. It adopted solar because the economics were too good to ignore, and the state’s leadership responded. Dean, Columbia Climate School New York
