Mamdani Forms Business Advisory Council with C.E.O.s

Mayor Zohran Mamdani has attracted more than a dozen executives to join his fledgling business advisory council, despite widespread fears among many Wall Street leaders that the mayor’s democratic socialist views will harm New York City’s economy. The list of 15 Wall Street, real estate and health care executives includes Scott Rechler, Hamdi Ulukaya, Kevin Ryan, and Priscilla Sims Brown. The Mamdani administration is expected to formally announce the appointments as early as Thursday.

The council does not include executives from some of New York’s largest employers in finance, including JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, American Express and Black Rock, or from big technology firms, including Meta and Alphabet. But the health care industry is heavily represented. The group also includes retired Wall Street executives like Robert Wolf, Antonio Weiss, and Tony James.

The creation of the council comes as the mayor and Wall Street struggle to establish a functional relationship. The mayor has won some business-class support by retaining Jessica Tisch as police commissioner, but others remain unpersuaded. The mayor’s office also reached out to Jose Tavarez, Ken Chenault, and Charles Phillips, though none joined.

“The doors of City Hall are always open to New York’s business leaders,” Mr. Mamdani said in a statement. On Wall Street, the council has sparked debate about whether executives should work with the mayor. Joining offers a voice on policies, but some fear it signals support for policies they oppose.
