JD.com Profit Signals Recovery in Food Delivery

JD.com returned to profitability in the first quarter, posting net profit of 5.10 billion yuan ($750.6 million) after suffering losses in its food-delivery business. The Chinese e-commerce giant saw revenue rise 4.9% to 315.69 billion yuan, reversing the 2.71 billion yuan net loss recorded in Q4 2025. This recovery signals progress in stemming losses from its competitive food-delivery venture launched just last year.

Since entering China's food-delivery market in early 2025, JD.com faced intense competition from established players like Meituan and Alibaba's Ele.me. The Beijing-based company employed aggressive pricing strategies to capture market share, which initially hurt profitability. Chinese regulators have repeatedly warned against excessive competition that has eroded profit margins across the food-delivery industry.

Despite year-over-year profit decline from 10.89 billion yuan, the quarterly return to black demonstrates JD.com's ability to navigate competitive pressures. While e-commerce remains the company's core business, the improved food-delivery performance suggests the company may have found a sustainable balance between growth and profitability in this challenging market segment.
