James Murdoch eyes Vox’s New York Magazine in latest media buy

Media investor James Murdoch is in advanced talks to acquire the New York Magazine and podcast unit of Vox Media, sources said. The purchase would be routed through his Lupa Systems vehicle and remains subject to completion. Adding the storied magazine and growing audio business would broaden the Murdochs’ portfolio of culturally resonant properties and could unlock fresh cross‑platform advertising revenue for brands.

Lupa Systems already holds stakes in cultural icons such as Tribeca Enterprises, which runs the Tribeca Film Festival, and MCH Group, the parent of Art Basel. Kathryn Murdoch, James’s wife, has recently backed the Bulwark, a digital news outlet targeting anti‑Trump readers. The New York acquisition would complement these holdings by adding a legacy print brand with a strong digital audience.

The deal reflects broader pressure on digital‑media firms grappling with a soft advertising market, shifting search traffic and intensified competition. By bundling a premium magazine with a growing podcast network, Murdoch may achieve economies of scale and diversify revenue beyond volatile display ads. Closing the transaction would mark a notable consolidation of niche media assets under a single investor overall.
