James Murdoch eyes takeover of Vox Media

James Murdoch’s investment vehicle, Lupa Systems, is in advanced talks to buy the bulk of Vox Media, the digital publisher behind New York magazine and a portfolio of high‑profile podcasts. Sources close to the negotiation say the deal would give Lupa a foothold in U.S. news and culture, complementing its stakes in Tribeca Enterprises and Bodhi Tree Systems.

Vox has been exploring strategic options for months, fielding interest from Versant and other potential buyers. A sale could also take the form of a minority investment or a decision to remain independent. Murdoch, who recently received $3.3 billion from a family settlement that untangled control of the Fox News and Wall Street Journal trusts, now has the liquidity to pursue a full‑scale acquisition.

If the transaction closes, Lupa would become one of the few private owners of a diversified digital media platform, potentially reshaping advertising and subscription dynamics across news, lifestyle and podcast segments. Jim Bankoff, who built Vox from a sports blog into a multi‑brand empire, would likely negotiate a role in the merged entity, preserving the company’s editorial independence while unlocking new revenue streams.
