Hollywood is scrambling to capitalize on internet horror memes, with Warner Bros. reportedly paying more than $1 million for the film rights to Siren Head, a character created eight years ago by illustrator Trevor Henderson. This deal signals a new strategy for studios seeking their next big hit, moving beyond traditional franchises to mine online communities for proven concepts.

Henderson, who previously saw no financial return from his creation despite itsspawn of YouTube films, merchandise, and video games, described the recent influx of attention as "disorienting." The trend mirrors the success of low-budget horror films like "Backrooms" and "Obsession," which leveraged internet memes and online fame to outgross major studio productions.

Studios are now actively scouting platforms like YouTube, Reddit, and Roblox for concepts with pre-existing Gen Z appeal. As Michael De Luca, co-chair of Warner's motion-picture group, stated, these online phenomena are viewed as a new source for adaptations, akin to traditional literary properties, reflecting a significant shift in content acquisition strategies.
