Gig Workers Struggle as Gas Prices Spike

Rising fuel costs are forcing gig economy workers to make tough choices about which rides to accept. Jonathan Meyers, a rideshare driver in Los Angeles, spends precious seconds evaluating each fare that appears on his phone, weighing potential earnings against fuel consumption and time.

For a short 1.2-mile trip offering $7.02, Meyers calculates that the seven-minute drive to pick up the passenger might not justify the gas expense. Longer rides present their own challenges - a cross-town journey paying $23.15 would consume an hour of his time, while an airport run to LAX for $35.59 covers 13.2 miles and takes 53 minutes.

These calculations have become increasingly complex as fuel prices climb, forcing drivers to work longer hours to maintain their income levels. The situation highlights how macroeconomic factors like fuel costs can dramatically impact the gig economy's operational dynamics, potentially affecting both worker earnings and consumer prices.
