Germany Repurposes Nuclear Plants for Fusion Energy

Germany is converting two decommissioned nuclear power plants into fusion energy sites to secure low-cost power for its industrial sector. This strategy attempts to reverse the 2011 decision to exit nuclear power following the Fukushima disaster by betting on high-risk, high-reward technology.

Focused Energy plans to install over 1,000 lasers at the Biblis plant in western Germany. The system would fire fuel pellets 10 times per second to generate energy. Simultaneously, Proxima Fusion is developing a stellarator at a Bavarian site using a twisting magnet arrangement to contain superheated plasma.

These ventures represent a strategic hedge by pursuing both laser and magnetic confinement methods. Success would eliminate meltdown risks and minimize radioactive waste, though the technology remains theoretical. The outcome determines if Germany can stabilize energy costs for its heavy industry without relying on volatile external energy markets.
