Gamuda and MMC Engineering appear poised to lead the construction of the Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT) Mutiara Line, specifically its complex 6km cross-sea link, according to Maybank IB analyst Yin Shao Yang. The project, connecting Penang Island to Seberang Perai, is slated for award by July 2024, with construction starting in 2027 and completion targeted for 2031. Due to its engineering demands, the job value is estimated between 5 billion and 8 billion ringgit, Yang notes.

The project's complexity, requiring high structural rigidity and a 62-meter vertical clearance, presents significant subcontracting opportunities for firms like YTL, Malaysian Resources, and Dhaya Maju Infrastructure. Maybank maintains its positive outlook on Malaysia's construction sector. This development signals a major infrastructure win for these contractors and underscores growing Malaysian public transport investments.
