CNN, MS NOW, and Politico filed a lawsuit Monday against the Trump administration after President Trump barred the outlets from the White House on Friday. In a joint legal motion, the organizations argue the ban constitutes a direct assault on the First Amendment, seeking immediate restoration of their press passes, which were revoked Saturday. The case was assigned to U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly, a Trump appointee who previously ruled in favor of CNN reporter Jim Acosta during a similar access dispute in the first administration.

Trump defended the action on Truth Social, stating the move targets "FAKE NEWS" rather than the free press. He told reporters there was "no reason" for the timing of the ban and asserted he does not have to allow outlets writing "fake stories" into "the people's house." The lawsuit names Trump, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, spokesperson Steven Cheung, and Secret Service chief Sean Curran.

Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press President Bruce Brown called the ban "flatly unconstitutional" and "textbook viewpoint discrimination." The dispute follows a prior conflict where Trump barred The Associated Press over its refusal to use the term "Gulf of America," a case where an appeals court ultimately allowed the restriction to stand.
