Chinese carmakers recorded another jump in European monthly sales in June, solidifying their position as mighty competitors for local auto companies seeking to reinvigorate growth. The market for battery-electric vehicles in Europe grew 51% last month.

New-car registrations for BYD models more than doubled on year to 38,455 units across the European Union, the U.K., Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, according to ACEA. SAIC Motor’s registrations grew 47% to 38,647 units, while Leapmotor logged a more than sixfold increase to 12,829 vehicles.

Meanwhile, Germany’s Volkswagen recorded growth of 6.4% to 345,937 units, and Jeep maker Stellantis posted a 5.3% increase to 191,012 vehicles. While established European auto groups sold many more vehicles than Chinese rivals in absolute numbers, BYD and others logged much steeper growth rates, signaling fierce competition for drivers in the region.
