Buffett Halts Midyear Gates Foundation Donation Over Epstein Review

Warren Buffett is breaking from two decades of tradition by skipping his scheduled midyear donation to the Gates Foundation, citing concerns over the organization's review of its ties to Jeffrey Epstein. The 95-year-old investor has typically transferred billions in Berkshire Hathaway shares each June or July as part of his “lifetime” pledge to the philanthropy.

Buffett's decision comes as the Gates Foundation retains law firm Wilmer Hale to investigate its connections to the late sex offender, with findings expected this summer. The Berkshire Hathaway chairman has communicated with foundation leadership, including CEO Mark Suzman, about the review process. Both Buffett and the foundation declined to comment on the matter.

This pause represents a significant shift in one of corporate America's most visible charitable partnerships. Buffett's annual donations have historically represented one of the largest individual philanthropic commitments, with his pledges totaling tens of billions in Berkshire stock over the years. The delay could signal broader scrutiny of charitable organizations' governance and donor relationships.

Buffett may wait until his traditional Thanksgiving letter to announce his final decision, leaving the foundation's fundraising timeline uncertain during a critical giving season.
