NPR's $113M Funding Boost

NPR received two substantial gifts totaling $113 million, including the largest donation from a living donor in the network's history. Philanthropist Connie Ballmer contributed $80 million for digital innovation efforts, while an anonymous donor gave $33 million to the NPR Network of affiliated stations across the United States.

The donations arrive as public broadcasters face funding challenges after Congress clawed back $500 million in annual funding last year. Though NPR was somewhat insulated from direct impacts since only a small portion of its budget comes from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the ripple effects still affected hundreds of stations nationwide.

Ms. Ballmer stated that she supports NPR because "an informed public is the bedrock of our society." NPR CEO Katherine Maher expressed hope the gifts would inspire further donations and help the organization reach audiences where they are, providing stability during a period of financial uncertainty for public media.
