Apple Invests $30B in U.S. Chip Production

Apple is set to spend over $30 billion with chipmaker Broadcom over the next five years, aiming to produce more than 15 billion chips domestically. This agreement marks the largest specific investment Apple has announced as part of its broader $600 billion pledge to invest in the U.S. over four years.

The deal will support Broadcom's expansion of a manufacturing facility in Fort Collins, Colorado, and includes radio and other components essential for Apple devices' communication functions. This move aligns with U.S. government efforts to boost domestic manufacturing and tech production.

While significant, this investment focuses on relatively lower-cost radio chips. Apple's more expensive, high-performance components like logic, memory, and storage chips are still primarily manufactured overseas. Recent price surges in memory chips, driven by AI server demand, have already impacted device costs, suggesting that relying on domestic production for these critical, high-value components remains a longer-term challenge for Apple.
