Airlines are imposing new fuel-related fees on passengers as jet fuel prices surge, significantly increasing travel costs this summer. Starting April 1, Cathay Pacific Airways will charge a $200 surcharge per ticket, up from $149, according to its website. Air France-KLM has also increased its fuel surcharge on certain routes.

JetBlue Airways recently added fees, raising checked bag costs to $49 during peak periods and $59 for last-minute bookings within 24 hours. These measures reflect the massive financial pressure airlines face from fuel, their second-largest expense after labor. The trend, beginning in Europe and Asia, is now hitting U.S. travelers hard.
