Modernizing the grid isn't a long-term aspiration that can wait. More Power Fortifies Electric Grid, but Perils Also Lurk (U.S. News, July 3) illustrates the risks facing the power grid this summer.

Extreme heat, drought, wildfires and the rapid growth of artificial intelligence data centers are creating a more complex operating environment for utilities.

But the answer can't be limited to adding generation alone. The U.S. needs a smarter, more flexible grid that can adapt in real time, making better use of existing infrastructure to respond to rapidly changing conditions.

This requires software that can provide system-level intelligence and coordination, giving utilities greater visibility and operational agility.
