U.S. stocks were mixed as deadlock in the Middle East offset relatively benign consumer-inflation data and an artificial-intelligence earnings bonanza. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished about flat, down 21.58 points, to 53770.27. The broad S&P 500 rose 20.30 points, or 0.26%, to 7748.50. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite added 143.04, or 0.54%, to 26588.49.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note declined 0.001 percentage point, to 4.682%. The yield on the policy-sensitive two-year Treasury fell 0.019 percentage point, to 4.198%. The Consumer Price Index rose 3.4% in July from a year earlier, easing slightly from the June rate, the Labor Department said. The market response to the data was tempered by concerns that inflation relief could be short-lived.

Oil futures rose 7 cents, or 0.08%, to $83.27 a barrel in New York as rhetoric from the U.S. and Iran suggested the impasse over the Strait of Hormuz was set to continue. While U.S. oil prices are down roughly 26% from their wartime highs, they have risen 11% in five sessions.
