U.S. stocks experienced a significant decline following the Federal Reserve's decision to maintain interest rates at their current range of 3.5% to 3.75%. This pause was accompanied by concerns that further rate hikes might be imminent later in the year, exacerbated by escalating tensions related to the war in Iran.

Despite the Fed's decision, three dissenting votes indicated a potential for a hike, leading to initial market optimism and a weakening U.S. dollar on speculation of a July increase. However, Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh reinforced the board's dedication to reducing inflation to the 2% target during a subsequent press conference.

The market's reaction was stark: the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 1153.18 points (2.19%) to 51594.14. The S&P 500 decreased by 112.63 points (1.52%) to 7316.15, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 433.97 points (1.74%) to 24442.94, now nearing a 10% drop from its June record and approaching correction territory.
