Elon Musk's Tesla, SpaceX Face Investor Scrutiny

Elon Musk, once celebrated as the world's first trillionaire following SpaceX's record IPO, is now facing investor impatience as ambitious promises for both SpaceX and Tesla face financial realities. Tesla's shares plummeted approximately 15% on Thursday, wiping out $200 billion in market value after the electric vehicle company missed earnings targets and reported negative cash flow for the first time in two years. This downturn occurred amidst a broader market selloff driven by concerns over excessive spending on artificial intelligence by major tech firms.

During an earnings call, Musk tempered previous guidance regarding the rollout of Tesla's Robotaxi service, Optimus humanoid robots, and its long-in-development electric semi truck. SpaceX shares, which debuted at $135 and briefly traded above $225, have seen a nearly 50% decline from their peak. The stock fell below its IPO price within weeks and has lost over $1 trillion in value from its highest point. Further pressure mounted after SpaceX postponed a Starship rocket test launch and as investors anticipate a significant release of shares from lockup restrictions in early August, potentially allowing insiders to sell and increasing selling pressure.

Samer Halawi, a consultant, noted that SpaceX's public status has amplified pressure, particularly as it ventures into speculative areas like deploying AI satellites.
