Dollar Hits 10-Week Low Amid Fed Rate Doubts

The dollar fell to a 10-week low against a basket of currencies on Monday, reflecting doubts over whether the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates this year. Weak jobs and retail sales figures, along with subdued inflation prints, have prompted markets to trim bets on U.S. rate rises.

The DXY dollar index fell to 99.294, its lowest level since early June. Simultaneously, the euro rose to a two-month high of $1.1614 and sterling hit a three-month high of $1.3571, as interest-rate expectations shifted in their favor.

U.S. rate-rise expectations have been scaled back since the Fed’s last meeting in July when Chair Kevin Warsh refrained from providing forward guidance. Money market pricing showed a 31% chance of a 25 basis-point rate increase at the September 16 meeting, compared to odds above 50% before the August 7 nonfarm payrolls report.
