Bipartisan Bill to Ban Sports Betting on Prediction Markets

Senators Adam Schiff (D‑California) and Brian Curtis (R‑Nevada) plan to file a bipartisan bill on Monday that would bar any Commodity Futures Trading Commission‑regulated entity from offering contracts tied to sporting events. The proposal explicitly targets prediction‑market platforms such as Kalshi and Polymarket, whose U.S. operations currently allow users to wager on game outcomes.

Sen. Adam Schiff argues the CFTC has effectively opened a “backdoor” for sports betting, sidestepping state‑level consumer safeguards and tribal gaming compacts. He says the arrangement generates no public revenue while exposing bettors to unregulated risk. By moving the activity under federal oversight, the bill seeks to restore state authority and protect tribal sovereignty.
