Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) announced it will move forward with the $6.2 billion development of the offshore Umm Shaif Gas Cap, joining France’s Total Energies, Italy’s Eni and China National Petroleum Corp. The decision reflects confidence that long‑term gas demand will remain robust even as Middle‑East supply vulnerabilities persist.

An offshore gas cap is the accumulation of gas that sits above the oil column in a reservoir. The Umm Shaif project is expected to unlock more than 600 million standard cubic feet per day of natural gas and associated liquids, which represents nearly 10 % of the United Arab Emirates’ current daily consumption. Production is slated to begin in 2030.

The investment marks the group’s longest‑operating offshore field and fits into Adnoc’s broader strategy to grow its natural‑gas and liquefied‑natural‑gas portfolio. The company sees a continued rise in domestic and international demand driven by the proliferation of energy‑hungry data centers and growing Asian populations, making the project a long‑term bet on gas market resilience.

The move underscores confidence that gas will remain a key energy source despite geopolitical tensions.
