World Cup July 4th Disrupt NYC Events

Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration flagged permit applications for 25 major events in city parks that could be denied under an emergency order. The measure targets large gatherings requiring police security as the city prepares for the World Cup overlap with July 4th celebrations for the nation's 250th anniversary.

Though World Cup games are in New Jersey, they're expected to draw visitors to New York, straining city resources. The U.S. Coast Guard may restrict access to waterways during Sail4th 250 celebrations, potentially affecting kayakers and commercial vessels from July 1-9.

Event permits generated $4.7 million in city revenue last year through site fees. The emergency order gives Parks Department broad latitude to deny applications from June 11 to July 19, while returning events remain unaffected. Most community events like picnics and weddings will still be approved.

Advocacy groups criticize the city's preparation, arguing officials should tap into the tournament's economic opportunities instead of restricting parks events. Nonprofit groups managing popular parks report no impact on their summer events, suggesting a targeted approach to resource allocation during the busy summer period.
