Wisconsin Supreme Court Race Loses Musk's Star Power

Wisconsin's Supreme Court election Tuesday lacks the national spotlight that characterized recent races, with Elon Musk's absence marking a dramatic shift. The race between liberal Chris Taylor and conservative Maria Lazar has generated minimal voter interest compared to the $25 million Musk-funded campaign last year that drew national attention.

Several factors explain the subdued atmosphere: no pivotal policy issues like abortion or labor rights are at stake, and partisan control of the court remains unchanged regardless of the outcome. Early voting has dropped sharply, with 112,000 fewer absentee ballots cast compared to last year's race. Political analysts predict turnout could fall into the 40s, down from 61 percent in the 2025 spring election.

While Taylor has out-raised Lazar significantly and Democrats have invested $775,000 in her campaign, Republicans appear less energized after losing four of the last five Supreme Court races. A Taylor victory would give liberals a 5-2 majority on the court, potentially cementing their control for a decade. The muted election could also diminish attention to local races for school boards and mayors that typically benefit from the heightened interest surrounding Supreme Court contests.
