A gunman opened fire near the White House complex on Saturday evening while President Trump was inside. Secret Service officers returned fire, killing the attacker. A bystander was struck by gunfire, though no officers were wounded. The incident prompted a brief lockdown as reporters on the North Lawn were hustled to safety.

The deceased shooter was identified as Nasire Best, 21, who had a history of incidents with the White House. Best was arrested last July for walking into a restricted area and had previously claimed to be "Jesus Christ" and expressed a desire to be arrested. Court records show a judge issued a "stay away order" barring him from the White House area.

This shooting marks the third time in the past month that shots have been fired near top U.S. officials. After the incident, Trump thanked law enforcement and emphasized the need for enhanced security measures at the White House, calling for "the most safe and secure space of its kind ever built in Washington."
