Washington Square Park Gates Debate Divides Greenwich Village Residents

Washington Square Park's midnight curfew has sparked a heated debate in Greenwich Village. Community Board 2 is weighing whether to install permanent gates at nine entry points, replacing the current system of nightly police barricades. The park officially closes from midnight to 6 a.m., but enforcement remains inconsistent.

Rich Caccappolo, chair of the Parks and Waterfront Committee, noted there's "no push" by the board to implement gates. The committee voted to inquire with the Parks Department about alternatives after a public meeting at NYU. This follows previous attempts in 2005 that failed due to resident opposition over the park's open spirit.

Local residents hold divergent views on the proposal. Brian Meister supports gates as a sign of respect, while Marelle Myers argues European parks remain open successfully. Student Peter Pirone received a $100 ticket for nighttime entry, questioning the closure rationale. The Parks Department currently has no gate plan under consideration.
