NYC Car-Free Parks Push: Forest Park Freedom Drive Closes

New York City's push to ban cars from all parks gains momentum as Freedom Drive in Forest Park closes to traffic on Wednesday. The temporary ban follows a successful petition by local resident Andy Smith, who lives near the park in Queens. The closure is part of a broader campaign led by New Yorkers for Parks and Transportation Alternatives calling for Mayor Zohran Mamdani to eliminate personal vehicles from city parks citywide.

The campaign builds on the 2018 car-free victories at Central Park and Prospect Park, which have since seen dramatic increases in pedestrian and cyclist use. Central Park Drive now ranks as the park's most heavily used resource, according to the Central Park Conservancy. Advocates argue that cars halve available park space and create safety conflicts between drivers and park-goers. However, some local officials and residents counter that closing park roads inconveniences drivers, increases travel times, and can raise public safety concerns when roads become deserted.

The movement reflects a global trend accelerated during the pandemic, when cities worldwide created more outdoor spaces by restricting vehicle access. While about 4.5 miles of park roads became car-free in 2020, only two have since reopened: Freedom Drive and Silver Lake Park Road on Staten Island. City officials say they're considering the campaign, with Mayor Mamdani's office noting they're always exploring ways to enhance outdoor enjoyment for New Yorkers.
