Navy sailor Joshua Aviles, deployed for over nine months aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln in support of the war with Iran, shared that his father, Luis Manuel Aviles, was detained by immigration authorities. Mr. Aviles wrote on Facebook that his family had applied for a green card and possessed valid work permits, describing the arrest as heartbreaking while he works long hours at sea.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Border Patrol officers arrested Luis Manuel Aviles Roa during a vehicle stop in Key West, Fla., stating he is in the country illegally. Although Joshua’s mother noted her husband has lived in the United States for 19 years, the agency emphasized that military service does not automatically grant immunity from enforcement.

This incident highlights tensions regarding the Parole in Place program, which shields undocumented relatives of service members from deportation. The U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln recently began its 13,000-mile journey home to San Diego amid reports of poor conditions. An A.P. investigation found more than 50 parents and spouses of active-duty members were detained during President Trump’s second term, underscoring the ongoing crackdown.
