A University of Wisconsin-Madison staff scientist has been charged with poisoning a colleague's water bottle with toxic chemicals after years of workplace resentment. Makoto Kuroda, 41, allegedly contaminated his co-worker's water with chloroform and paraformaldehyde, then admitted to the crime in interviews with police.

Court documents reveal Kuroda had simmered with jealousy for five years over his colleague's promotions while he remained stagnant. The victim discovered the poisoning when he tasted foul water from his Trader Joe's bottle and spat it out. Two days later, he reported a suspicious odor from his laboratory shoes. Kuroda allegedly used ChatGPT to calculate poison dosages despite the AI's warnings.

Kuroda faces two felony charges of recklessly endangering safety and tampering with a household product with intent to harm. The university has placed him on administrative leave and revoked his research privileges. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Tuesday. The case highlights the potential for workplace conflicts to escalate into criminal behavior, particularly in high-stress research environments where toxic chemicals are readily accessible.
