The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting Tuesday to condemn deadly attacks on U.N. peacekeepers in south Lebanon, with senior officials calling for de-escalation between Israel and Hezbollah. Two Indonesian peacekeepers were killed Monday when a roadside explosive struck their convoy, marking the second deadly incident in 24 hours.

Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the U.N.'s peacekeeping chief, reported that the situation has "dangerously deteriorated" along the Blue Line dividing Israel and Lebanon. He noted a "worrying increase in denials of freedom of movement and aggressive behavior" against peacekeepers. The attacks occurred as Israel has intensified airstrikes and extended its land incursion about 11 kilometers into southern Lebanon.

Indonesia's ambassador to the U.N. expressed grief and anger over the loss of three servicemen and five wounded peacekeepers, all in their 20s. While Israel's ambassador blamed Hezbollah for both incidents, Lebanon's ambassador called the attacks "barbaric and irresponsible" regardless of who was responsible. Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attacks and warned that violations against peacekeepers could be prosecuted as war crimes.
