Trump's $250 Bill Plan Faces Hurdles

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed the Treasury is preparing a $250 bill featuring President Trump's image, marking a significant break from long-standing American tradition. The move would make Trump the first living president to appear on U.S. currency, commemorating the nation's 250th birthday. Bessent stated the agency has been developing mock-ups of the proposed note and has directed political appointees at Treasury to advance the initiative.

The initiative requires Congress to change the 1866 law prohibiting living individuals from appearing on currency, a tradition established to avoid any perception of monarchy. Trump's push includes a commemorative $1 coin with his image and his signature appearing on all U.S. currency this year, replacing the traditional signature of the U.S. treasurer. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing has begun preparations, though the move reportedly stirred controversy within the agency.

The proposal drew criticism from Democrats like Senator Mark Warner, who questioned whether the administration was prioritizing Trump's legacy over economic issues. Trump's previous attempts to put his image on currency faced accusations of violating laws meant to prevent a monarchy-like appearance. The abrupt reassignment of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing's former director coincided with these currency plans, with her departure reportedly not being her choice.
