The Trump administration plans to revoke visas of foreign citizens who came to the United States temporarily for tourism or business but applied for asylum to stay longer. The State Department has begun reviewing such visas, with cancellations expected in waves. The move could affect as many as 200,000 U.S. visa holders and asylum applicants.

"Under President Trump and Secretary Rubio's leadership, we are making clear that a visa is a privilege — not a right," Tommy Pigott, a State Department spokesman, said. The agency is coordinating with the Department of Homeland Security to identify and revoke nonimmigrant visas of foreigners who came claiming to be short-term visitors but then filed for asylum.

The targeted foreign citizens came on B1 or B2 visas, issued for short-term stays. The Homeland Security Department has halted processing of asylum applications, though a federal judge said the administration must review them. On Friday, Judge Jeannette A. Vargas struck down efforts to halt visas for applicants from 75 countries.

Separately, the State Department told embassies and consulates to reschedule all visa interviews until consular officers complete training on a restrictive public charge rule, denying immigrant visas to applicants who might rely on public assistance.
